A patient was seen at an Erlanger emergency room and did not have insurance. This patient was instructed to follow up with a provider at the office I am currently employed at and when the patient called they were very distraught when I quoted self pay prices. I then assisted the patient with calming down and asked if they had been informed of charity care when they were seen at the ER. Pt stated that she didn't know, she couldn't remember. I asked patient to give me until the end of business that day and I would see if we could do anything to help them. I immediately got off the phone with the patient once I was certain she was calm. I then began emailing the charity care department and they were soon informing me that based on the information gathered that the patient was eligible for charity care and I called the patient and got them scheduled with the provider and honestly thought no more of it until I was called in to the office manager's office and informed that this same patient had written an email and it was submitted as along with a nomination for the award and I was blessed enough to win.
I love my job and it is all because I know I make a difference for the better, every single day. I don't care if I ever get recognition for the work I do in any field I chose to work in, what is the most important to me is to know that I have done everything in my power to help others and that my work ethic is not compromised. Although, having said that, it was nice to receive the recognition.
