I have worked in health care for over 15 years, and this experience has led me to develop an understanding of nursing that I do not feel I would realize without the involvement my history has provided. As I reflect on my personal philosophy of nursing, memories of many different types of encounters come to mind. I believe that compassion is the single most important aspect of nursing. Knowledge is important and wonderful, but without compassion, a nurse can cause more harm than good. For example, if a patient tells a nurse they are having thoughts of suicide, the compassionate nurse will be able to make them feel safe enough to share their feelings and be willing to accept the help they need to become healthy. A knowledgeable nurse may be able to fill out all the boxes on the admission form and curtly answer the questions asked by the patient, but without compassion, a safe environment for the patient will not be created. A nurse must possess skills needed to save lives and follow doctor's orders, but the true test of a superior nurse is not with how well they follow sterile procedure, but in how well they listen to their patients. Many of the most important qualities of a truly great nurse cannot be taught in school but is simply something a person either has or does not. I have worked with many nurses over the past 15 years, and the most memorable moments are when the nurse showed how much she cared about the patient by being kind and compassionate to their patient. In summary, my philosophy is that I will always try to treat my patients the way I would want to be treated if I needed help. I want to always show benevolence to my patients by helping them to overcome their health problems with a considerate and non-judgmental attitude. I will be compassionate with all the patients I have the honor of serving in my career.
