  • In 2017, the Office of Public Health Scientific Services expanded to include both the CDC Office of Science and the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety. These two Offices were added to the existing assets in the OPHSS. The new position was rebranded as the Deputy Director for Public Health Science and Surveillance (DDPHSS). In addition to the existing duties and new Office's, I led the development of the CDC/Public Health Data Strategy and the initial Data Modernization Initiative, and provided leadership guidance on COVID data issues, executive review of COVID related MMWR articles, and executive leadership roles related to CDC's COVID response.

  • The Office of Public Health Scientific Services (OPHSS) includes the National Center for Health Statistics and the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services with over 1000 employees and contractors and over $400M in budget. OPHSS provides leadership for the agency and its federal and non-federal partners on scientific services including epidemiology, surveillance, health statistics, laboratory services, health informatics, and scientific workforce. Many of the CDC's most recognizable brands are in OPHSS including: Epidemic Intelligence Service and other public health scientific training programs, MMWR and Vital Signs publications, National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System and BioSense Syndromic Surveillance System, Community Guide for Preventive Services, Epi Info Software program, National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey, National Health Interview Survey, National Health Care Survey, Vital Statistics program.
  • Dr. Richards is also leading CDC's Surveillance Strategy. This effort seeks to consolidate and improve the agency's surveillance data systems (>100 systems, ~400M$) and activities which are distributed throughout the agency's programs.
