As Maintenance Supervisor:
Oversees daily activities and shift operations in the maintenance and repair of airport roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, runways and taxiways, and grounds maintenance and landscaping activities. Supervises roads crew in cleaning roadways, runways, parking lots, etc., and performing asphalt and concrete repairs. Supervises grounds crew in performing grounds maintenance and landscaping, including mowing, grading, seeding, planting and fertilizing. Additionally, is responsible for summer laborers assigned to grounds maintenance activities. Keeps abreast of the trade, e.g., development of new engineering equipment or new types of fertilizers or insecticides. Provides input to the supervisor regarding budget needs, including additional personnel requirements and the need for purchase of new equipment. Participates with the supervisor in planning work projects. Estimates time, personnel and materials needed for work projects. As required, coordinates projects with supervisors in other branches to assure appropriate sequence of work. Meets with airline personnel to schedule asphalt and concrete repairs. Works with leaders to plan and schedule ongoing work such as landscaping activities for the season. Establishes monthly and weekly schedules for preventive maintenance inspections. Plans work schedules on a daily and weekly basis. Determines priorities and establishes deadlines on the basis of work order designation and the schedule of work in progress.
Assigns work orders and recurring preventive maintenance functions to leaders in the roads and grounds units. Coordinates emergency repairs, e.g., asphalt breakup on taxiway or water line break, shifting work crews as needed. Spot checks work in progress for proper procedures and quality of materials, such as appropriate mix of concrete for assigned project or proper use of fertilizers, and to assure completion within assigned time frames. Inspects completed work for quality and compliance with federal, state and Authority safety regulations and accepted trade practices, e.g., proper use of pesticides, proper care and of equipment, no dips or waves in an asphalt repair, proper pruning of trees and shrubs.
As assigned, supervises street-side snow removal activities; assures crews have materials, manpower and equipment to complete the work. Participates on panels to rate job applications for vacant positions. Interviews applicants and recommends selection to the supervisor. Recommends promotions. Plans leave schedules and approves leave requests. Approves time and attendance reports, assuring that work is reported under the appropriate cost centers and project numbers. Evaluates performance and determines training needs. Explains or applies the basic features of established personnel programs such as equal employment; incentives and awards; merit promotion; and time, leave, and overtime policies. Adjusts informal complaints, counsels employees on disciplinary matters and develops documentation in support of removals and reprimands. Conducts training meetings on safety procedures and proper use of materials and equipment. Prepares procurement requests for supplies and equipment. Prepares reports for the Environmental Protection Agency on usage of herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Maintains schedules, expenditures, overtime and other records in a computer file.
Serves as contact with manufacturers' representatives concerning equipment purchases. Locates sources for specialized equipment or materials, (e.g., boom mower, asphalt roller, new shrubbery), and, as needed, travels to vendor locations to inspect equipment before purchase. Uses measuring instruments such as slide rule and tape measure to develop specifications for construction of sidewalks. Occasionally uses hand and power tools such as hammer drill, grinder, pruner, and trimmer, and equipment such as boom mower and road grader to demonstrate proper work methods. Drives a pick up truck to airport locations. Performs other duties as assigned.
