It was a high volume night in the emergency department and we were working hard to get caught up on our tasks. On nights like that, I often round the ER so that I can lay eyes on all of my patients and the family with them. I noticed a family with a child who looked so sickly, and sunken in and immediately took them to my area for further assessment. When collecting his bloodwork I noticed that he was super dehydrated, pale, and tachypneic. After learning from his parents that he had lost twelve pounds in a week I knew that he needed a room as soon as possible. He was a newly diagnosed diabetic and his parents were unaware of the clinical manifestations of Diabetic Ketoacidosis. We were able to administer proper medications and transfer him to CHOA within 30 minutes of me notifying the charge nurse of my suspicions based on his physical appearance and assessment. Had I not caught on to his condition, he could have coded in the lobby at any minute. I have since received two more entries to receive this award from coworkers who admire the intuition I have pertaining to our patients in other unexpected events.
