Topic: Addressing Melanoma Diagnosis Disparities in Patients with Darker Skin Tones: Examining the Influence of Clinical Presentation and Inadequacies in Healthcare Provider Training
Conclusion: Our research highlighted significant disparities in melanoma diagnosis and outcomes among patients with darker skin tones, notably being more likely to be diagnosed at later stages and experience higher mortality rates. Contributing factors include the prevalence of acral lentiginous melanoma in less visible areas and decreased provider awareness due to training exclusivity. Addressing these gaps through enhanced medical education in diverse skin presentations is essential to improving early detection and reducing mortality. Future research should explore the impact of educational interventions on provider performance, patients’ risk perception, and biological differences in melanoma subtypes to further guide equitable screening and diagnostic practices.
